Our 5 Favorite Pieces of Low Tech Run Gear

by Jessie Givens November 01, 2016

With all the amazing innovation in our sport it’s easy to get distracted with the newest gadget, app, tracking tool, etc. that hits the market.  And don’t get us wrong, we love those things as much as the next runner, but sometimes you want to go back to the simple days of just running, no status updates required.  Here we have a list of our favorite low(er) tech pieces of run gear.

  1. Good sunglasses or a trusty trucker hat -  Aside from looking like a boss, quality head gear can ensure you outlast the sun and glare. We really like this hat from the charity More Than Sport because each purchase will help those in need!
  2. Run belt or arm band - Phone, key, credit card. Low profile and engineered for efficiency this investment is well worth it! If you’re anything like us, a post run stop at the coffee shop is a must and you don’t want to be sans dough if that coffee happens to need an acai bowl on the side.
  3. Old race shirt  - Oh sure it doesn’t have the built in UPF 50 and yes, it’s cotton so it’s probably not great at moisture wicking, but it does have history! Isn't there just something great about throwing on that ultra-worn, so soft, slightly oversized shirt that takes us back to a simpler time?
  4. Good tunes - Motivation is the key to accomplishing great things and there’s hardly a better motivator than your favorite band whaling away in your ears! Now here’s the challenge: try listening to said music without the interruption of your tracking app, without looking at your smart watch or phone, and just run for a while.
  5. Foam roller - This doesn’t need to be anything fancy, although we are in love with this Trigger Point roller(!), but it should be durable. So while this isn’t for the actual act of running, it does play an integral role in our routine.

There you have it folks, low tech, highly awesome gear that we think every runner should have!
